History Of Murren And Wengen
The history between these two villages is long standing; both have been important centers since the Middle Age period. The original inhabitants were farmers who lived in small wooden huts under the protection of local mountain lords. In 1573, Urs von Wattenwyl received permission from his lord to build a chapel at Murren which started its development as an official village. Later on, due to its location within easy reach of Bern and other cities by train or cable car, many wealthy people began building summer homes there creating what would become one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations today.
