Galveston History
The island of Galveston is located off the coast of Texas and has a rich and varied history. The first known settlers in the area were Native American tribes, who inhabited the island for thousands of years until European settlement began in 1817. As the port city grew, it eventually became an important trading center between Europe and North America. In 1900, Galveston was hit by one of the deadliest natural disasters in U.S. history: a devastating hurricane that killed up to 12,000 people and caused widespread destruction across the island. Afterward, new seawalls were built to protect against future storms while construction projects helped rebuild much of what was lost during this tragedy. Today, Galveston remains a popular tourist destination with its many beaches, historic sites like Bishop’s Palace and Moody Mansion, numerous museums dedicated to its unique past as well as attractions such as Schlitterbahn Waterpark or Pleasure Pier amusement park.
